There are two versions of this server, the e and p models. Below are the main differences between the two that might factor into deciding which one to get. The e model makes a great storage server if you don’t need too many PCIe slots (four) and go with the extra 2 SFF in the back. With the two SFF in the back connected to a raid controller it makes a good boot drive with mirrored SSDs. The p model makes a great VM server with a number of PCIe slots (up to 6), extra RAM and an extra two cores per CPU.
DL380 Gen8 Versions:
Takes two Xeon E5-2400 or E5-2400v2 series with up to 10 cores RAM up to 192 Gigs of RDIMMs (DDR3 1333) Storage options: 25 SFF (in front) with 2 more SFF (you lose a secondary riser with PCIe 3.0 x16 and an x8 slots) 12 LFF (in front) with 2 SFF (you lose a secondary riser with PCIe 3.0 x16 and an x8 slots) 8 SFF (in front) with option for 8 SFF (in front)

Both use the same hot swap power supplies that are either 92% efficient or 94% efficient. For more details on options for either model do a google search with “dl380e gen8 quickspecs” or “dl380p gen8 quickspecs” for their pdf. These make great starter servers for virtualization and storage servers while using very efficient power supplies. I’ve seen the 94% power supplies on eBay for less than $30.00 each. My 380e has dual 4 core CPUs with 24 gigs of ram, eight 2.5” hard drives raid-6, and a 10Gbit ethernet card. It runs at about 140 watts with one VM running 24/7 on Hyper-V 2019. The fan noise on this generation of servers is not that bad but you don’t want to hear it all day so it still needs to be somewhere that the noise and heat can be isolated. I measured the noise of my server about 6 inches (150mm) from the back (after it settled down from first boot) and I was seeing just under 50dB.
